Global warming it has been called the greatest threat facing humanity today. Among those addressing its supposed challenges are Christians, people whose faith and worldview require care for the planet (stewardship) as well as love for their neighbor and future generations. In the spirit of Proverbs 18:17 (The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.), Union University sponsored a formal debate on the issue between two premier Christian scholars. On one side is Dr. David P. Gushee, Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy and one of the drafters of the ECI. On the other is Dr. E. Calvin Beisner, one of the authors of A Call to Truth, Prudence, and Protection of the Poor: An Evangelical Response to Global Warming and associate professor associate professor of historical theology and social ethics at Knox Theological Seminary. He is also one of the founders of The Interfaith Stewardship Alliance a leading advocacy group for Biblically based environmental stewardship using sound science and economics and putting humanity’s needs, especially those of the poor, first.
